Gina Rinehart is an Australian billionaire mining magnate and one of the most powerful women in the world.  In 1992 she became Executive Chairman of Hancock Prospecting and proceeded to transform the financially challenged mineral exploration and extraction company into the largest and most successful private company in Australia’s history and one of the largest private mining houses in the world.  Under her leadership, the company has diversified its interests, expanding into mining, iron ore, copper, potash, gold, coal, cattle, dairy, and property.

Rinehart's flagship achievement is the Roy Hill project, a $US10 billion endeavor which uses some of the largest mining equipment in the world and has employed directly and indirectly over 50,000 people in Australasia.   Rinehart's investments extend beyond mining, including acquisitions in agriculture, such as the iconic S. Kidman and Co pastoral company and the renowned 2GR Wagyu brand.

Growing up on a sheep and cattle farm in the remote and rugged region of Pilbara in northwest Australia, Rinehart was 13 when she first read and fell in love with the literature of Ayn Rand -- a continuing connection manifests in the name of one of her subsidiaries, Atlas Iron.  An enormously generous philanthropist, Rinehart supports numerous medical, sporting, and veterans causes, and most notably serves as Patron of Australia’s Olympic swimming, rowing, volleyball, and synchronized swimming teams.

As one might imagine, catching the eye of this hard-charging titan of industry has been no small feat—and after finally securing her acceptance to become our 8th recipient of The Atlas Society’s Lifetime Achievement Award, July timing presented a scheduling conflict as she’s leading a delegation of Australian teams she’s sponsoring at the Summer Olympics. We will record the interview in Perth, and debut this interview at our gala dinner at the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C. July 25th.
